All New Friends: Making Friends At Raves

Most people head to a festival with their usual rave family and friends. You rarely see people raging solo at a festival. For those who want to go to an event but have no one to go with don’t let your friends hold you back! It can be an eye opening experience experiencing a rave by yourself, especially when it’s something you want to do. So how do you make friends at rave?

Survival of the PLURest

What got me hooked on anthropology was the idea that humans are basically animals.  We are given life, taken care of by our guardians, grow, adapt to our surroundings, reproduce, and eventually leave this world just like any other species in the animal kingdom. Simple right? What sets us apart from other animals is that humans have the ability to reason and form complex thoughts.

I Pushed The Button!

I fell in love with Above & Beyond in the summer of 2007. The moment I heard “Satellite” their music gripped my heart like no other sounds could. I followed them to many concerts, festivals and clubs in the years to come (18 total to be exact) including the legendary TATW 350 at the Palladium in Los Angeles.

Flirty vs. Friendly

I’m used to anyone coming up to me and striking up a conversation whether it may be about the DJ playing, my outfit, or rave life in general. In fact, I love it when people come up to talk to me because that means I have a friendly aura. On the flip side, there’s also the chance that a guy comes up to me because he thinks I’m single and wants to flirt with me. I’ve had some pretty weird experiences with guys hitting on me at events, but one of the weirdest moments was at San Jose State’s Jack Yo Lantern. I was dancing and having a good time when a guy came up to me, took my hand, and said that I looked good in my outfit.

The 5 Types of People in Your Rave Family

A rave family consists of many kinds of people, a colorful group of individuals that have wonderful quirks. Everyone has a role in the group whether they know it or not. And whether we like it or not, we sometimes do need these kinds of people in our group. They keep us grounded (or in other cases, literally on the ground) and have our backs no matter what situation we’re in.

How My Rave Family Changed My Life

Everyday I wake up at 6:15am and leave for work by 6:50. Then I come back home by 7:45pm (7pm if I’m lucky) to pack my lunch and clothes for the next day, talk to my boyfriend for an hour on the phone, and go to bed by 11pm. Next day, repeat. So you can imagine that on my mom’s birthday I forgot to pick up the cake after a long day with no breaks. I came home to my dad cussing me out in front of my mom and sister, saying that he doesn’t care that I’m working, that I should take my time reading my texts, and that I’m a stupid little…cue the list of angry names he continues to call me while he storms angrily away into his room.

An Open Letter to Non-Ravers

After a recent argument with my dad about my participation in the EDM community (particularly my unparalleled desire to attend Electric Forest for the first time this year) I got to thinking about how raving is perceived by those who have never experienced it. It wasn’t that long ago that I had never attended an event, although I have liked the music for a while.  Sadly, I know that there are a lot of stereotypes and misconceptions about the culture I have come to know from my family in the past six months. It’s sad for me, and I’m sure for others, to know that something I love so much has such a bad reputation.
