The butterflies are made out of 2 layers of mesh(?) with 2 rhinestones in the middle of each. The mesh was a pleasant surprise because I thought the butterflies would be plastic. The string is just like the clear plastic string (non-stretch) that people would use for kandi. So handle it gently, but the adjustable clasp closure on the back of each necklace is really neat. The clasps allow you to wear the butterflies higher or lower on your neck. And since the string is so thin and clear, it's basically invisible when you have the necklace on. The overall effect is super cute and unique. It's worth the $5 that I paid, but probably not more than that. I also like that you can decide to wear the butterflies together or separately since each one is a separate necklace.
