Bay Area native Niko Zografos is no stranger to trance. His love for trance music and the scene led him to aspire to become one of the greatest DJs and producers in California and eventually created his own events company, Phoria. Over the years of supporting Phoria I saw nothing but greatness in him: he makes sure that we are on top of our promotions for upcoming shows, listens to trance fans and brings out the producers they want, and even with all of the obstacles he makes time to do what he loves to do: produce trance music. He was soon signed onto record label Future Sound of Egypt (FSOE) with his first single ‘Phoria’ with Mitka in Beatport’s Top 100 and his latest single ‘Revelation’ was ranked #51 after being out for only a day and still on the rise at #28! I was lucky enough to have had the chance to talk to Niko about his growing music career:
What was trance music like when you first discovered it and do you like the direction it’s heading in?
When I first started listening to trance I got into it because of psytrance when a friend introduced me to Infected Mushroom around 2007. Trance back then definitely had a lot of amazing music with pure trance elements even in just progressive trance and had that sound that everyone recognized. As far as for the direction it’s going, I love it because it’s not as predictable! I feel like all of the trance now, whether it may be from Simon Patterson to Ilan Bluestone, has such a wide variety now like psytrance, techtrance, progressive trance, and the thing is that artists work so hard to be not predictable. I’m always really excited to be discovering new music and the really good artists today are unique.
What inspires you and how do you stay motivated?
Good music that’s for sure. As far as staying motivated it’s pretty easy because I’m doing something that I love. Even when things get tough you just gotta remember why you do something; no matter what you do in life there’s always going to be some struggles, there’s going to be things that try to push you down, but it’s how you work around those times. Times like those are when you really see someone’s true character because if you got the cards stacked against you and willing to push hard you’ll definitely get better and improve.
Who would you like to collab with and why?
Probably someone with a different style but with some folks who have also inspired my sound. As far as a different style I think it would be really cool to collaborate with Magnus, he’s a really amazing psytrance artist. I also have a couple good friends I’d like to work with such as James Dymond, he’s been giving me a lot of advice producing and is an amazing mentor, Adam Ellis, and of course Ronski Speed. I’ve been friends with him a long time and I’ve been bugging him about that.
What was your favorite moment of 2015?
Probably two moments that go hand in hand: the day ‘Phoria’ (Ferry Tayle Remix) got Future Favorite on A State
Of Trance I was contacted to play at FSOE 400 USA and at that moment I was just like, “Wow, getting voted Future Favorite wasn’t only enough I got offered the biggest gig of my life.” That show was just amazing, especially the live broadcast.
Any goals for 2016?
To have as much quality music out possible and to play bigger shows. I won’t be playing in San Francisco as much, but I definitely want to play in L.A more since I only got to play there twice last year. I play in San Francisco so often that I need to spread out my time to make it more special. But other than that I just want to keep getting better and always have more fun!
What do we have to look forward to?!
New music very soon, I have a lot in the pipeline. You can expect music out within the next few months. Some big show announcements soon, I can’t say what but definitely pay attention for that!
Niko Zografos is a humble rising star in the trance scene and the Bay Area is lucky to have him pushing for more trance artists to visit. If you’re ever in San Francisco and looking for a trance show, chances are Phoria will have something to please your trance needs!
Phoria partners up with TranceFamilySF to bring these three amazing headliners to Ruby Skye in San Francisco, CA!
